RIP James Doohan.

I must have seen him at 3 or 4 conventions, during my time of actively going to cons. He was, along with George Takai, one of my favorite guests. My best memories of seeing him was at a convention he did with Patrick Troughton (shortly before he died) and Paul Darrow. I was....13? I remember having a wonderful time and Jimmy, who wasn't well, still enjoying the hell out of it all at his table, chatting with fans, laughing, giving Q&As, etc. etc. etc. I was a pretty nervous kid, but his friendly, gregarious personality put me at ease instantly. Somewhere, I probably still have the autograph I got from him.

I saw him at cons a few more times, but always bigger ones where he was shuttled around by handlers. Still, he made time for any fans he came across. He actually enjoyed being with us and was always the funny, down-to-earth guy with the (shocking, at first!) British Columbian accent and the BIG laugh.

I knew he lived very close to where I live now, but I'd never, y'know, seen him around. I'd also heard he was very ill; he apparently made it to the inauguration of the SFX downtown. I couldn't go, but I heard reports that he'd had trouble walking, etc. So it's no real surprise that he's passed away, but still definitely a bit of a shock.

If I do see any local info about condolance cards, etc., I'll try and pass it on.
