Youtube is like a bottomless pit. You take one step in and start falling forever--unless you're lucky enough to grab onto a rope. It took me hours to get out of the pit this time. I wound up finding a huge number of early Floyd clips, including promotional videos for their first singles! I stuck to the earliest stuff, 1966/7-1970. (My favorite Floyd era ends with Dark Side in '73, so...) I doubt most of these clips will convert anyone not already interested, but most of them are really great history for those of us too young (i.e. pretty much all of us reading this) to have seen the Pink Floyd at their underground height. I've *tried* to put them in chronological order, but it's tough.

Syd's era (Pretty much from 1966-late 1967)

From Let's All Make Love in London, a film celebrating the underground scene, here's a 31 minute *early* Floyd jam session, featuring "Interstellar Overdrive" and a proto-"Careful with that Axe, Eugene." Really amazing stuff. NSFW, due to a few early clips.

Early singles Arnold Layne, See Emily Play (a personal favorite) and Apples and Oranges. I think Paintbox is from this era too, but I'm not sure. Psychedelia abounds.

A version of Astronomy Domine with an interview that's worth it just for the interview alone. ("But don't you think your music is too loud?") Lucifer Sam should also be from around that time, as they were both on the Floyd's first album.

Finally, a tv spot for Jugband Blues shows a Syd Barrett who has pretty much lost it, dead-eyed and just trying to make it through the performance.

Post-Syd, Gilmour

A French tv concert, apparently Dave's first filmed work with the group.

Here's where chronology breaks down a bit and I start guessing. Point Me at the Sky and Corporal Clegg are from the Saucerful album, so I'd put their promo videos first. After that, with a couple of exceptions, it's anyone's guess, really, so I'll just stick in the links:

Careful with that Axe, Eugene
Let There Be More Light
Flaming, a Syd song, sung by David
What is, I believe, one of the many versions of Saucerful of Secrets
A 1970 live version of Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun (name taken from Moorcock's work, of course I love this one!)
Cymbaline from the album "More"
And finally, a lovely video from Ummagumma, Granchester Meadows, which I recommend to all of you who think Pink Floyd is just noise. :-)

So there you go. There was (believe it or not) a lot more up there--including a film from a soundcheck in 1970 in 4 parts--but I decided to spare us all. :-) Check out Youtube if you want more. Me, I'm going to bed.
