An up, a down...
Dec. 19th, 2006 06:41 pmCongratulations to the amazing Alison ("Dykes to Watch Out For") Bechdel, whose book Fun Home has been named Time Magazine's Book of the Year! I've wanted to read this since it came out months ago, but money woes kept me away. Now I feel like I'll be jumping on the bandwagon. But I'll read it anyway. ;-) It's nice that she's getting recognition outside the various subcultures (comics, queer friendly press, alt-weeklies, etc.) that have long known she's a genius. We tried to get her to come to 5Con the year we brought out Roberta Gregory, but a scheduling conflict prevented. It's one of my regrets; I'd have loved to have her as a convention guest.
And I just wanted to add to the general outpouring of sadness over the passage of Joe Barbera. A great (and underrated, these days) animator and businessman, he did more for American animation than just about anybody. And, apparently, he was a hell of a guy.
So, I'm celebrating for Alison and celebrating the life of Mr. Barbera.
