A somewhat rhetorical question
Sep. 3rd, 2007 12:53 amHow is "Second Life" not simply a MUSH/MUCK with graphics and sound? Honestly? People are falling all over themselves about how you can codebuild your environment and avatars, etc., and my reaction is that you could do that in text-based "VR" (and it kills me when people call SL VR, because, huh? No...) over fifteen years ago. The only addition is the graphics the web has enabled. So what's the big deal?
I mean, I had no interest in MUSHing, MUCKing or MUDing in the early '90s, why in god's name would I have any more interest in doing it now, when I have a lot less free time? (Well, to be truthful, I shouldn't have had as much free time then either, but that gets into the whole "didn't finally finish college until a couple of years ago" thing, and I don't really want to go there.)
I just don't get it. And given how low the subscriber and user rates are, despite the hype, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one....
just heard a thing on BBC World Service all about broadcasting from SL and how it was so new and shiny and exciting, etc. in the car. which should explain my little ranty-thing, I hope.
