Get well soon, Ms. S!
Oct. 16th, 2007 10:12 amVarious sources today are reporting that artist and all-around nice person Marie Severin had a stroke last week and is currently hospitalized. Evan Dorkin has posted an address where cards and letters can be sent.
Ms. Severin (I've never met her, yet I'm fighting the urge to just call her "Marie") has had a career that's stretched from coloring the classic EC horror comics of the '50s to a thirty or so years stretch at Marvel as a colorist, penciller, inker and production maven. She was, in her own way, a pioneer; as Clifford Meth says in this fine essay, "If Marie Severin had been a man, you’d be saying her name with John Buscema and Gene Colan. You should say it that way from now on."
A great artist and (from all I can gather) a great person, I always looked forward to her occasional forays out of retirement. And I'll add my voice to those saying, "Get Well Soon, Marie!"
Here's a small sample of Marie Severin's work on covers for Marvel. Tip of the iceberg, but take a gander. Nice figure work, nice composition. Very nice, indeed.
