Ok, just about everyone (even me, I'm sorry to say) has made some kind of quip related to Charlton Heston's passing, but one shouldn't forget he was a hell of an actor. The LA Times has a list of career highlights (and it's not a short list) starting here. Reading it made me want to see a bunch of these movies again. Although he's better known these days as a Conservative activist (even beyond his NRA lobbying), it's also important that we remember that he marched with MLK for civil rights in the '60s and was widely known as a really honestly nice and compassionate guy. What I'm saying is I didn't agree with many of his stances over the past decade or so, but I gotta admire him, both as an actor and as a person who was true to himself and his beliefs.

So yeah. The jokes have been made, and now we can remember the man with some appreciation.

And maybe go pull out our copies of "Touch of Evil" or "Planet of the Apes" or "Ben-Hur" or something and enjoy his talent.
It has been confirmed that author and scientist Richard Dawkins will be appearing as himself on Doctor Who later this season. I'm not a huge fan of Dawkins, but I like him a lot better than some of the people who've supposedly taken up his banner. And, of course, he is one of the luckiest men on the face of the Earth, as all good Doctor Who fans know.... :-)

Oh, and P.S.: "Partners in Crime" was watched by 8.4 million viewers on Saturday and then again by 1.2 million people on Sunday. And that's not counting what my friend [livejournal.com profile] spoomeister would call the "Yo-ho-ho" contingent. Just wow.
