Doctor Who--Matt Smith is the Doctor!
Jan. 3rd, 2009 10:22 amWho? I hear you ask. Well, here. And here. Oh, and here. And now you know as much as I do!
And I have to admit a small amount of initial disappointment. Not because he's caucasian (though Paterson Joseph is a very fine actor and it would have broken (admittedly, somewhat dubious) barriers, etc. etc.) No, my disappointment comes from the fact that he's so young. I mean, 26?? Not to say he can't do it (I'm sure people had somewhat similar problems with Peter Davison when he was cast, though he was at least over 30 [EDIT: he was 29 when cast, but 30 when he actually first appeared, mea culpa]), but I have to admit, I was hoping for someone a bit older. More gravitas, less sex appeal. If you see what I mean. Possibly because I've watched a lot of the early years of the old series over the past few years and can see what an older actor brings to the concept.
Still, I really can't and shouldn't pre-judge. He might be the most brilliant thing since...a very brilliant thing. So, I'm just going to have to try and swallow my uncertainty and celebrate, saying....
MATT SMITH IS THE DOCTOR!
and, yes, I am taking some glee in all the fansites/rumor boards that declared several months ago that the part was absolutely PJ's. Damage control and stories that Joseph must have turned it down commencing in 3...2....1........
