For those of you who are currently under a bushel or hiding from the world, the announcement was today, live, across the world and....

PETER CAPALDI IS THE DOCTOR!

This makes me so, so happy. He's an amazing actor, highly competent with amazing range. I've seen him do drama, I've seen him do comedy, and he's been brilliant at both. When his name appeared out of nowhere last weekend, I was incredibly taken by the idea, but thought, "Nahhh, couldn't be." He's 55, the same age William Hartnell was when he was cast in the role in 1963. He's a lifelong fan of the show. And he's very well-known as an actor. Arguably, the last time an actor with this much TV fame was cast in the role was Peter Davison in 1980. (Cast in 1980, first episode in 1981, for you pedants out there!) After Matt Smith (who I've loved as well), he'd be an incredibly surprising actor to cast...and incredibly welcome! But it'd never happen.

But here we are! And, as is important in a regeneration situation, I'm both very sad that Matt Smith is leaving, but incredibly EXCITED for the new stories, the new Doctor, Peter Capaldi. I cannot wait to see what comes next!!
