Festivals, Cons and me here....
Jul. 14th, 2005 09:38 pmSo, Nerd Prom started today and, once again, I remain here in Seattle rather than San Diego. I have yet to actually make it down there for the big show, even having lived on the Left Coast for...9 years now. Wow. I was actually offered a ride down once from Roberta Gregory, but since I couldn't afford the entry fee or a hotel room at the time, it was a no-go. Ah well. Luckily, thanks to the wonder of the internets, I can sit here on the sidelines and read all the news shortly after it's revealed and the con reports after it's all over. What I miss are the panels (there are a few biggies I always want to attend) and the dealer's room with the ridiculous media displays. It's become the biggest general media show in the country which is both good and bad. These days, I'm not even sure if I would want to go, it's just so freaking huge. Ok, I'm lying, I'd love to go. ;-)
To add a teensy bit of insult to injury, today I received an e-mail from the Fairport Convention mailing list (no idea how I got on it, but I ain't knockin' it) about this year's Cropredy Festival. For obvious reasons, I've never been to one of those either. (Admittedly, the last time I was in England I missed the festival by, I think, about a week and a half. But I doubt I could have convinced my parents to go down to Oxfordshire with me and camp for a weekend to go to a folk festival. Hell, I don't think I'd be able to convince Amythyst to do that!) I have hopes of getting to one of these someday....before the geezers are too old to play!
So. Today Ronelyn and I went back to the local tux shop, where we asked a bunch of questions and got measured. I'm pretty certain I have almost all of it hammered out and so I'm planning to call After Hours in NJ tomorrow to firm things up. My mother, by the way, has been less than supportive about some of this. She told me she thought I was making "a mistake" in my choices, which I had had to really work to figure out. Thanks, mom.
The rest of the day was....eh. I got laundry done, that was my other big success. Tonight I tried to buy Waterson:Carthy tickets (Amythyst and I decided we'd been looking forward to it enough to spend the money on it), but ticketweb seems to have screwed up. I shot them an e-mail to try and get a confirmation about whether the sale went through or not, so we'll see.
So yeah, not a great day, not a terrible day. Got to hug Amythyst, which always helps to make a day pretty ok. :-)
