(Yes, I was out all day and finally just finished watching. Sorry if I made some of you wait.)
Ok, the thing to concentrate on is, regardless of what Moffat has said, regardless of what the promotional people say, this is a mid-season episode, not a season opener. Because, to be honest, as a "Big Marquee Season Opener," this story was a bit...less interesting, less complex...just less. Not bad, by any means, but I spent quite a bit of time thinking, "Is this all there is?" rather than being wowed. There just wasn't much there there.
I repeat again, this story wasn't bad, so much as simple with very little incident or--honestly--suspense. There was one clever bit, but other than that there wasn't much to write home about. It was fluff, fun fluff, but fluff nonetheless, and after last Christmas' magnificent special, I have to admit it was a bit of a disappointment.
Ok, I started to write a bit down there, but I guess I should really put in a ( spoiler space )
NEXT WEEK: Aliens! Danger! And a frightened little girl (I think!) at the center of it...it's "The Rings of Akhaten" by Neil Cross!
