....er....except, well, you know.

So, [livejournal.com profile] spoomeister came to the realization that "Speaker (or Nancy) Pelosi" scans pretty exactly with "Eleanor Rigby," but he couldn't come up with anything beyond that. And that's my kind of challenge, I guess...

There is something I want to say before I get to the lyrics. I am happy that the Democrats have taken Congress. I think there's the potential for good change to come out of it, though we'll obviously have to see what happens now that the Dems have some power again. I'm saying this because the song turned out very cynically. Not that there isn't a lot to be cynical about, given that this is politics. But I am much more excited than the song would let on--it's just how the lyrics scanned, ok? :-)

Nancy Pelosi
Sits in a chair in the House banging gavels all day
What does she say?
Cutting debates short
Forcing a vote on the motion that’s come to the floor
What is it for?
All the Congress Gridlock
When will they get things done?
All the Congress Gridlock
That’s how our country’s run.

Senator Edward
Happy at last now he’s back in the majority
Now he can be
Advancing his issues
Hoping that people will keep all his good work in mind
Leave bridge behind
All the Congress Gridlock
When will they get things done?
All the Congress Gridlock
That’s how our country’s run.

Ahh, look at all the Congress Gridlock
Ahh, look at all the Congress Gridlock

Nancy Pelosi
Has two more years to prove she’ll do more than just shout
Or else she’s out
Senator Edward
It doesn’t matter if he tells the truth or he lies
He’s in ‘til he dies
All the Congress Gridlock
When will they get things done?
All the Congress Gridlock
That’s how our country’s run.

original lyrics here, for anyone who doesn't know them....

It was rough. I went with "Nancy" as a counterpoint to "Eleanor," like "Senator Edward" is to "Father McKenzie." (I wish I could have fit "Kennedy" in there.) The "Leave bridge behind" was a bit of a compromise--I knew I wanted it in there, but it was hard to kludge it in. I'm glad it worked for you. :-)

Yeah, I found no room for GOP sadness either....I think things crystalized with "Congress Gridlock," though I like Pinky's line too. :-)

*clap clap*

We were laughing here in the Bay State as yet again, some poor Republican had to be the sacrificial "who? Someone ran against Kennedy? Bwahahaha" this year yet again.

I fully expect that we will reach the time Teddy retires (or dies), and when his name isn't on the ballot, we will all either die of shock, or write his name in, sure there's been a mistake.
