And yet, no mention of 5Con...Sigh....

Any of you Hamsters/5Con alumni wonder what Rod Roddenberry got up to? Well, he seems to have joined the family business....
I know this has all been info available to anyone who cared to look for it, but I must admit, I haven't thought about him in quite some time. I do like the bit in his bio about how, at Hampshire, he finally connected with his father's legacy:
Rod also spent time learning about Star Trek as well as his father's life and work. Stories from millions of fans and Gene's own writings, helped Rod discover a new world of philosophy, social & cultural commentary and the in-depth examination of the human condition.
I don't think it's ego or exaggeration to say that Excalibur and 5Con I had a great deal to do with the above; I remember when he got to Camp Hamp, he refused to have anything to do with Star Trek...until he started coming to our TNG showings. All of which, of course, culminated in his helping us to get his mom to come to our little (very little) convention. (I still remember how
waysofseeing had to take Rod and Majel to the mall when she decided he needed new jeans...)
Anyway, I just thought it was interesting to think that we might have had a hand in steering him towards the Trek path. (Only a small hand, of course, but...)

Date: 2007-11-14 06:31 pm (UTC)I dunno, he was pretty actively anti-being-associated-with-his-dad's-work until he started hanging out at ASH on Trek nights. I think he'd have gotten there anyway (apparently some cynical fans have suggested the money was a big factor in his "conversion," though I don't buy that), but we might have helped him ease into it. After all, his official bio does associate his reappraisal of Trek with his time at Camp Hamp....

I have no memory of driving Rod and Majel anywhere. I think you may be conflating two different things. I only remember meeting Majel once, briefly, in the dining commons.
