I'm gonna start out by quoting cartoonist Scott Shaw!:

"Remember when the merest mention of the year 2001 immediately implied "The Future?" In 1976 the millennial year was decades away, but as of midnight tonight, the year 2001 will only signify the past!"

2001 was....a very strange year. When it started, I was applying (at work, in secret!) to colleges and trying to get financial aid together. As 2001 ends, I've completed my first quarter back at school, succeeding beyond my wildest hopes. In 2001, I finally got out of the rut I had been in--after 3 years, I finally quit my dead end job at Microsoft (which I hated) and made the leap to financial instability. (Well, to be honest, 2002 will really be that leap, as most of the savings I want to use are basically gone...) My family made it through my sister's wedding basically intact, and I made it to Western Massachusetts for a visit, which made me happy. My friends and I successfully battled the evil Nyarlathotep to a standstill--in a role playing game, of course!

Things weren't all wonderful--not by any means. I was actually at my parents' near Washington, DC on September 11th, about to volunteer at the senior center my mom works at. The fear was palpable as the rumors flew...no one knew exactly what was going on, everyone else had heard something. All we could do was go home and watch CNN. Somehow we made it through those first few days and somehow I managed to *fly* back to Seattle and start school. I'm lucky enough to be a couple of degrees of separation away from anyone directly involved in the tragedy, but that didn't make it any easier. I spent a lot of time being very anxious about the impending war...and trying to help others be less anxious.

Which brings me to my big constant this year, one of the real lights of my life--my dear Amythyst. This isn't the time, nor the place to go into any details, but she really has helped me make it through so many times. Her caring and her just plain wonderfulness has been one of the best things about this year--and will hopefully be one of the best things about next year! I hope I can be half as wonderful to her as she is to me. (Well, I hope I can be more, but...you know what I mean.)

So. I wish everyone health, happiness and love in 2002. Hope everyone has safe and fun New Years, and I'll talk to y'all soon. As for me, I have *2* parties to go to this evening, thanks to the Spoo-mobile! Wish y'all could be here...
